These programmes are developed and reviewed by the MkulimaHub editorial team in collaboration with practising agronomists, veterinarians, and agricultural engineers across Kenya. Every activity is grounded in Kenyan growing conditions, locally available inputs, and real market realities.
Sample Schedule (First 2 Weeks)
Land Preparation
Deep plough to 25 cm. Incorporate farmyard manure (5 t/ha) or compost. Cabbage requires fertile, well-drained soil with pH 6.0–7.0.
Nursery Sowing
Sow cabbage seed in raised nursery beds at 5 cm row spacing, 1 cm deep. Apply Dithane M-45 drench to prevent damping-off. Water twice daily. Varieties: Gloria F1, Pruktor F1, or Sugarloaf.
Nursery Management
Thin to 2 cm spacing. Shade with 50% shade net during hot afternoons. Germination takes 5–7 days.
Pest Check in Nursery
Check for diamondback moth caterpillars and aphids. Apply Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) if caterpillars are detected. Never use synthetic pyrethroids in nursery — kills beneficials.
